The Smart Grid-Game - achieve the energy turnaround together!
Stuttgart, October 3rd, 2013. The "Expedition N"-truck (Expedition "Nachhaltigkeit"(Sustainability)) of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung will be year-long on tour in Baden-Württemberg. Visitors in the truck can play a multiplayer game. Their mission is to reenact the functionality of an intelligent power grid ("Smart Grid") as a group. They become a "human Smart Grid" and learn how the energy turnaround can be achieved by means of intelligent teamplay of power producers and power consumers. The video shows the opening day of the "Expedition N"-truck on the German Day of Unity 2013 in Stuttgart. The minister of traffic - Winfried Hermann - was one of the gamers.

Games help Green Technologies with Water-Revolution.
Adapting water infrastructures to future challenges is a necessity, but not all the decision-makers understand the dependencies and interactions involved in this. Within the recently launched TWIST++ project, which is being coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, a large project consortium is developing new concepts and a system to support the planning process. A so called serious game is used as an additional tool, which explains the correlations in layman terms, and will make it easier to implement the concepts in the future.
The new concepts developed in the course of the project are made accessible to experts and laypersons via a planning support system and a simulation game. The head of the project, Dr. Harald Hiessl from the Fraunhofer ISI, is convinced that: “The serious game helps decisionmakers in particular to develop a basic understanding of the numerous interdisciplinary connections, dependencies and interactions. This can overcome the reluctance to consider innovative and integrated infrastructure concepts when planning retrofits and renovations. The
planning tools to be developed are therefore critical to establish the innovative, sustainable technologies”.
The TWIST++ project will run until the middle of 2016. The first results
which can be transferred to other towns, rural areas and redeveloped
industrial zones are expected in 2014. The project is being funded as
part of the German Ministry of Education and Research’s (BMBF)
funding measure “Intelligent and Multifunctional Infrastructure Systems
for Sustainable Water Supply and Disposal“ and forms part of the
funding priority “Sustainable Water Management (NaWaM)” within the
Framework Program “Research for Sustainable Development (FONA)”.
